Twenty-three years ago, in the spring of 2000, a couple of guys from the York Manor neighborhood started the York Manor Horseshoe League (YMHL). The league is comprised of mostly York Manor residents but a few are from Shetland Hills and other nearby neighborhoods. The size of the league has fluctuated from 12, in its initial year, to 25 players. All matches are played with rotating teams of two members. The rules have been developed over the years to try to keep all matches competitive, including having a handicap system. After the end of the season, a league Champion is declared and a Singles Tournament is held. In 2008, they added a new custom where the winner of the Singles Tournament chooses a charity and the league members and friends donate to that charity.
The 2022 Singles Tournament Champion, Dick Wallace, chose Baltimore’s Helping Up Mission as his charity and $1100 was collected. A York Manor resident heard about what the league was doing and disclosed that they would anonymously match the funds donated by the YMHL! Because of the matching funds, the $1100 dollars became $2200, more than doubling last year’s record amount. Since 2008, the YMHL has now donated $13,250 to various charities. The YMHL members are proud of these donations and would like to invite others in the neighborhood to join us. To learn more about the league or to ask about how to join as a regular (or as a sub to try it out), view their website
The league members would like to send out a very special thank you to the anonymous donor from this year and to let them know that their donation was truly appreciated!
